How many times have you pasted the same paragraph into a chatbot? “Write in a warm tone. Keep it short. Here is my business.” Google just made that copy-and-paste habit optional. This guide shows you how to use Gemini skills, the new feature that replaces Gems, and gives you five skills worth building for your business this week, plus a prompt that writes the first one for you.

The news

What Google just launched, and why the timing matters

On September 30, 2026, Google announced skills in Gemini, a way to save your most-used instructions once and reuse them whenever you need them. According to Google’s Workspace Updates blog, skills began rolling out in the Gemini app on October 13, with the rollout expected to finish by mid-November.

Skills also replace Gems, the custom assistants many people built over the last two years. Google says Gems for personal accounts stop being supported in November 2026. On November 17, Gems move into the Gemini app’s Settings panel, where you can still use them for a while. Business and enterprise Workspace accounts have longer: Gems stop working there no sooner than March 1, 2027, and education accounts no sooner than June 1, 2027. Remaining Gems are converted into draft skills automatically.

One wrinkle: in an October 13 update, Google said the Workspace launch of skills is delayed and it will post when that rollout resumes. If you use Gemini through a work account, you may not see skills in Gmail or Docs yet.

The plain explanation

What are Gemini skills?

Write it once. Use it everywhere. A skill is a saved set of instructions that tells Gemini how you want a certain job done. Instead of opening a separate Gem, you call a skill right inside any chat. Here is what Google and its partners have confirmed:

  • Slash to start. Type “/” and the skill’s name in the prompt bar.
  • Stack them. You can run more than one at once. Google’s example pairs a writing-style skill with a brand-guidelines skill.
  • Add reference files. Skills can include plain text documents, PDFs and images.
  • Automatic matching. When your prompt matches a skill, Gemini can run that skill on its own.
  • Portable format. Skills use the open, Markdown-based SKILL.md standard, so instructions you wrote for another AI tool can come with you.

Myth: skills are a technical feature for developers. Fact: a skill is plain English. If you can write an email explaining how you like something done, you can write a skill.

Step by step

How to use Gemini skills in five steps

Google’s menus are still rolling out, so the exact buttons may look different on your screen. The process stays the same:

  1. Pick one task you repeat every week. Replying to inquiries, writing captions, summarizing meeting notes. Start with the one you explain most often.
  2. Write the instructions once. Who it is for, the tone, the length, what to always include and what to never say. The prompt below drafts this for you.
  3. Save it as a skill and attach your references. Your service list, a brand guide PDF, or an example post you love. Gemini can also help you build a skill from an existing chat.
  4. Call it with a slash. Type “/” plus the name, then add today’s details, like the customer’s message.
  5. Test it three times, then tighten it. Each time the result misses, add one line to the skill instead of fixing the draft by hand.

Help me write a reusable Gemini skill.
The task I repeat: [describe it, e.g. replying to new client inquiries]
My business: [one sentence on what you do and who you serve]
Interview me with 5 short questions, one at a time, about tone, length,
must-include details, things to never say, and when a human must step in.
Then write the skill as clear instructions with these headings:
Purpose, When to use, Steps, Tone, Always include, Never do, Check before sending.
Keep it under 250 words. Don't invent facts about my business.

Already have Gems? You don’t need to wait for the automatic switch. Open each Gem, copy its instructions, and save them as a skill now so you can test it while your old Gem still works.

Your takeaway

5 Gemini skills a small business can build this week

  • /inquiry-reply. Turns a new customer message into a warm first reply with your hours, next step and a link to book. Pair it with a human review before sending.
  • /brand-voice. Your tone, favorite phrases and words you never use, plus one example you love. Stack it with every other skill.
  • /meeting-recap. Paste rough notes and get decisions, owners and dates in a short list you can send to a client.
  • /caption-set. One idea becomes three captions for different platforms, each with a clear call to action.
  • /second-opinion. Google’s own example: ask for three to five distinct viewpoints before a tough decision, so you decide with more angles in view.

If your whole week is made of tasks like these, skills are a good first step, and a full system is the next one. The honest part

Are Gemini skills safe for business? Before you hand it the keys

Skills save time, but they also repeat your mistakes faster. A few habits keep you in charge:

  • Keep reference files clean. Leave client names, account numbers and private records out of anything you attach.
  • Watch automatic matching. Because Gemini can run a skill on its own, read the first line of each answer to see which skill shaped it.
  • Keep a copy outside Gemini. Skills don’t sync between the Gemini app and Workspace, and sharing is still coming. Save your instructions in a document so you can rebuild or move them.
  • A person sends the final message. Let the skill draft. You check facts, prices and promises before a customer sees them.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are skills in Gemini? +

Skills are saved instructions you write once and reuse in Gemini. You call one by typing a forward slash and its name in the prompt bar, you can stack several in one prompt, and you can attach reference files such as PDFs, text documents and images.

Are Gemini Gems going away? +

Yes. Google says skills replace Gems. Gems for personal accounts stop being supported in November 2026, and on November 17 they move into the Gemini app’s Settings panel. For Workspace business and enterprise accounts, Gems stop working no sooner than March 1, 2027. Remaining Gems are converted into skills automatically.

Are Gemini skills free? +

Google says skills are rolling out in Gemini chat globally across all Google AI plan tiers, and Android Authority reports that includes free personal accounts. Google says skills are for people 18 and older for now. Workspace availability depends on your plan, and that rollout was paused on October 13, 2026.

Do Gemini skills work in Gmail and Google Docs? +

Skills are coming to most Workspace apps for Business and Enterprise plans, but the Workspace launch was delayed as of October 13, 2026. Skills also don’t sync between the Gemini app and Workspace, so a skill you want in both places has to be created in each.
