There is a presentation on your calendar. The ideas are in your head, the notes are scattered, and the blank first slide is waiting. Here is the good news: as of last week, ChatGPT can build the deck with you. If you have wondered how to make a presentation with ChatGPT that does not look generic or get your numbers wrong, this guide walks you through it. You will see what OpenAI’s new Slides feature does, which option fits your plan (including a free path), and a copy-and-paste prompt that keeps you in charge of the story.

What changed

What is ChatGPT Slides?

Your deck now lives where your thinking does. According to OpenAI’s release notes, ChatGPT Slides began rolling out on October 16, 2026. It turns a conversation, your files or an outline into an editable presentation inside ChatGPT’s shared workspace, called Space.

  • Edit directly or by request. Change text, images, shapes and charts yourself, or ask ChatGPT to do it.
  • Match a look. Share an example deck so ChatGPT follows its style and layout.
  • Work together. Teammates can edit the same deck at the same time and leave shared comments.
  • Present or export. Present straight from ChatGPT, or export on the web to PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides. The desktop app can open the deck in PowerPoint or Keynote.

There are limits worth knowing. As TechRepublic (October 19, 2026) reports, comment-only sharing is not available yet, Windows 10 does not support the desktop component that local editing needs, and exported files should be checked for fonts, charts and branding.

Decision guide

Which ChatGPT presentation option fits your plan?

Start with the tool you already have. There are three honest paths:

  1. ChatGPT Slides — for eligible Pro, Business and Enterprise users with Space access. Best when a team builds a deck together. The rollout is gradual, so it may not appear on your account yet.
  2. ChatGPT for PowerPoint — a sidebar inside PowerPoint that drafts and revises slides. OpenAI’s help page lists it for Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu and K-12 users, with limited use on Free and Go.
  3. The free path — draft the outline and speaker notes in any ChatGPT chat, then build the slides yourself in PowerPoint for the web, which Microsoft lets you start for free, or Google Slides.

Myth: the AI makes the presentation. Fact: AI makes a draft. The story, the numbers and the person in the room are still yours, and the steps below are built around that.

Your takeaway

How to make a presentation with ChatGPT, step by step

This works with any of the three paths. The only difference is where the slides get built.

  1. Gather your source. Collect the notes, report, price sheet or past deck the presentation should come from. Remove client names or private details you would not want to share.
  2. Name the audience and the one action. Who is in the room, and what should they do afterward: book, approve, buy, learn?
  3. Ask for an outline first. Review the order and the story before a single slide exists. Fixing an outline takes minutes; fixing 15 slides takes an afternoon.
  4. Build the slides. In ChatGPT Work, ask it to create a presentation in Space from the approved outline. On the PowerPoint add-in, ask in the sidebar. On the free path, paste each slide’s text into your template.
  5. Edit one piece at a time. In Slides, select a single chart or text box and request a change instead of regenerating the whole slide.
  6. Rehearse out loud. Ask for speaker notes, then put them in your own words. The audience came to hear you.

Help me plan a presentation. Do not make slides yet.
Audience: [who will be in the room]
Goal: [the one action I want them to take]
Length: [number of minutes / about how many slides]
Source material: [paste notes or attach files]

1. Give me a slide-by-slide outline: a title for each
slide and the one point it makes.
2. Use only numbers, names and facts from my source
material. Mark anything missing as [NEED SOURCE].
3. Suggest one simple chart or visual where it helps.
4. Write short speaker notes I can say in my own words.
Ask me questions first if anything is unclear.

When the outline reads right, reply with “Now build the slides from this outline” in Slides or the add-in. Want your whole team working this way? What to check in an AI-made presentation before you present

Faster drafts are real. So is the risk of a polished slide with a wrong number on it. OpenAI’s own help page says outputs can be incomplete or wrong and recommends keeping a copy of important files before letting AI edit them. Run this check every time:

  • Every number matches your source document, line by line.
  • Every name, date and quote is real and spelled correctly.
  • Images are honest. No invented customers, fake testimonials or results you did not get. If an image is AI-generated and someone could mistake it for a real photo, say so.
  • The export looks right. Open the PowerPoint or PDF version and check fonts, charts and slide order.
  • Private details are gone. Client names, prices and internal notes stay out of shared decks unless they belong there.
  • It sounds like you. Rewrite any line you would not say out loud.

If your topic needs it, read do you have to disclose AI content for when a label is expected, and is ChatGPT private before you upload client files.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT make a PowerPoint presentation? +

Yes. ChatGPT Slides, which OpenAI began rolling out on October 16, 2026, builds an editable deck you can export to PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides on the web. The separate ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in drafts and edits slides inside PowerPoint itself.

Is ChatGPT Slides free? +

No. OpenAI lists ChatGPT Slides for eligible Pro, Business and Enterprise users with Space access, and the rollout is gradual. The ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in includes Free and Go users with limited usage.

How do I start a presentation in ChatGPT Slides? +

In ChatGPT Work, ask ChatGPT to create a presentation in Space and include your audience, goal and source files. You can also start from a conversation, an outline, a template, or an example deck that shows the style you want.

Can I edit just one slide without redoing the whole deck? +

Yes. In ChatGPT Slides you can edit text, images, shapes and charts directly, or select one element and ask ChatGPT for a change. Use the main prompt bar for edits across the whole deck.

What should I check in an AI-made presentation? +

Check every number against your own source, confirm names and dates, look over fonts, charts and layout after export, and make sure images and claims are honest. OpenAI itself says outputs can be incomplete or wrong.
